Aims

- To provide students with thorough understanding and knowledge of a range of different regulatory methods and regimes
- To provide students with an awareness of justifications for regulatory initiatives
- To stimulate students’ awareness of contemporary regulatory challenges
- To establish a critical understanding of the main regulatory and legal concepts and instruments concerned with regulation
- To introduce basic perspectives with regard to the understanding and conceptualisation of risk as a concept
- To provide an exposition through the use of examples of how regulators respond to different types of risks
- To develop students’ capacity for critical analysis and problem solving
- To develop students’ research skills through the preparation of coursework and class presentations
- To encourage student-driven learning

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The lectures will deliver content. The seminars will require advance preparation. The rationale for this teaching method is to provide students with material efficiently in lectures then promote analytical, argumentative and critical skills essential for discourse in seminars. The learning methods will rely on directed self study for the seminars time and independent study for the preparation of assessed coursework which will bring together the knowledge, cognitive, research and the assessed key skills.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The assessment provides an important incentive for students to establish substantial knowledge in the subject. The assessment, moreover, tests the demonstration of knowledge and understanding by applying the skills that need to be developed over the whole module and provides a means for testing students' ability to analyse, synthesise, deploy critical judgement and evaluate alternative arguments. It also allows candidates to demonstrate intended learning outcomes across a broad range of topics within the syllabus.
