Aims

To introduce advanced structural analysis and its use to both optimise structural performance (in terms of strength-weight ratio and production cost). To develop in the students an ability to apply mechanical and electrical principles to a range of drive systems, assemblies and components with particular reference to transport applications.

Outline Of Syllabus

- Introduction
- Response of structures and structural elements to static loading.
- Composite materials as structural elements.
- Recap on forced vibration of 1DoF system with damping applied to engine vibration.
- Free and forced vibration of 2DoF systems applied to car suspension and/or engine mounts: matrix methods;
modal coupling; introduction to Lagrangian method; vibration of continuous systems.
