Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Introduction to working in a research group and working in teams is provided in the induction session which also covers what is expected from the students, the assessment procedures and presentation skills.
Most of the module involves practical work within the research laboratories at the host institution and also time for experimental design and some background work.
Private study includes time for background reading, project planning and writing, and preparing reports and presentations.

Formative Assessments
Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Assessment of the practical work performed during the project will be carried out by the research supervisor. In addition, students will be expected to submit a final written report (max 30 pages) summarising the context and
the results. After submission of the report, students will make a presentation (15 minutes) on their work to an audience consisting of at least the research supervisor abroad and a member of academic staff at Newcastle, who will then together conduct an oral examination (30 minutes) of the candidate. The summary slide will consist of approximately 75% project summary and 25% reflection on skills acquired and developed.
The formative assessment consists of a first draft report of the project activities half way through the placement. It will include a brief introduction that sets the project topic into its context and a 'proposed approach' section that outlines the project plan, breaking down objectives and describing the state of the progress at the time of writing (no more than 5 pages - 1400 words - in total).
