Aims

The aim of this module is to provide the student with a critical awareness of the application of psychological knowledge and models used by Clinical Psychologists, and how this relates to the assessment and understanding of problem behaviour, the promotion of health and the alleviation of distress across a range of clinical populations.

Outline Of Syllabus

Students will cover a broad range of topics within clinical psychology as outlined below;

Introduction - What is clinical psychology?
Models that influence the practice of clinical psychology
Anxiety Disorders Across the Lifespan
Depression Across the Lifespan
Self-Harm and Suicidality Across the Lifespan
Schizophrenia
Borderline Personality Disorder
Substance Misuse
ADHD
Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The lectures and associated handouts and readings form the core knowledge and factual content of the course. The additional seminars will provide an opportunity for students to examine and discuss in greater detail and depth the role of clinical psychologists in specific service settings (e.g., older adult services and learning disability services). The private study is essential for in-depth review of knowledge imparted through lectures.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The essay section of the examination is used to assess: knowledge, independent learning and understanding of material relevant to the module; gathering of information from a variety of sources; understanding and application of theoretical concepts; critical evaluation of arguments and evidence; the ability to communicate effectively in writing; understanding and the ability for critical thought and original approach.
The multiple choice element of the examination will provide information about the depth and breadth of the students’ knowledge base and will specifically assess knowledge, independent learning and understanding of material relevant to the module.

FMS Schools offering Semester One modules available as ‘Study Abroad’ will, where required, provide an alternative assessment time for examinations that take place after the Christmas vacation. Coursework with submissions dates after the Christmas vacation will either be submitted at an earlier date or at the same time remotely.

The form of assessment will not vary from the original.
