To provide an independent research space for each student in the area of analytical chemistry. To provide students with enhanced global ‘soft-skills’ for general employability and greater practical skills for technical and research positions within the chemical field. The specified outcomes will require students to excel in problem solving, presentation and performance in analysis. Students will be required to analyse a number of unknown compounds and work on industrially relevant samples, at least one of which will be medically related, and produce detailed documentation on the work they perform as well as an oral presentation on how they produced their final results. Students will also gain an appreciation of the value/cost of certain experimental techniques and initiatives through basic budgetary constraints on access to instrumentation and sample quantities.

Outline Of Syllabus

Analysis and structural elucidation of unknown compound catalogue

Independent use of some or all of the following techniques:
Mass Spectrometry (Low and High resolution)
