Aims
The Year in Industry aims to:
• Provide an opportunity for experience of seeking and securing a placement with an employer (including preparatory research, CV, cover letter and interview)
• Provide practical experience of the application of technical skills that will benefit both future academic study (upon return) and longer term career goal setting and achievement
• Provide the opportunity to identify, apply and record the development of generic and specific workplace skills
• Facilitate personal development in a non-academic environment
Outline Of Syllabus
Timeline:
Stage 2 - Students will be responsible for identifying, applying for and securing the placement
Stage 3 – Placement year (September to June, minimum 9 months), students will be working for an employer on placement. During this time there will be no taught component. The employer will deliver appropriate induction and training over the course of the placement. During the placement year there will be one visit from a member of staff (where practicable) and three assessment exercises to undertake:
1.Brief ‘Company Structure’ report – outlining the organisation and understanding of place within it (1000 words)
2.Reflective Log – recording evidence against degree-related professional competencies (2000 words)
3.Essay – self reflection based on experience of placement and evidence from log book (2000 words)
A Learning Agreement will define the requirements on student and placement provider as to the educational expectations to satisfy the objectives of the module.
The appropriate Health and Safety risk assessments will be carried out in relation to each placement.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Students will be based remotely and there will be no taught components. All learning is via guided independent study using own research, knowledge of graduate skills framework and relevant professional competencies to ensure support for Intended Knowledge outcomes 1-3 and Intended Skills outcomes 1-5. The process of completing assessments will entail recording evidence, reflecting on own performance and demonstration of organisational awareness.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Measurement of the intended knowledge outcomes will be via the 3 assessments. In particular, item 2 will be evident within the company structure report. There should be evidence within both the reflective log and the essay that supports 1 and 3.
Students will be expected to evidence and reflect on intended skills outcomes 1-5 in the 3 assessments. In particular, evidence against these skills should be recorded in the Reflective log, along with professional competencies. The Essay will also provide opportunity to expand on all skills development.
