Aims

This is an alternative module to the dissertation. Drawing on the learning across a programme of study, the module provides students with an opportunity to apply learning to practical business challenges by working for an external client to address a business issue for their organisation.

This module aims to provide students with an opportunity to:

1. Evaluate empirical evidence and management information to inform understanding of classical and contemporary practice and thought;
2. Appreciate the complexities and constant change in addressing organizational needs in a challenging environment;
3. Develop leadership skills and appreciate ethical aspects inherent in management decision-making.

Outline Of Syllabus

• Introduction to the consultancy process as an experiential learning activity.
• Introduction to the roles and responsibilities of a consultant in conducting business research ethically.
• Introduction to the requirements of working in a team.
• Introduction to management of consultancy project to include;
o communicating in a professional business environment
o scoping and defining client aims
o planning required research activity
o identifying and mitigating associated risks
o conducting research
o consolidating and refining findings to support evidence based decision
o identifying suitable recommendations for improvement action
o presenting findings and recommendations

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The lectures will support the students to work as a team in conducting the consultancy intervention effectively. The online contact time will provide support to the student teams working with their individual clients.
Project work will involve the consultancy research and private study will involve individual learning, management report preparation and reflection of learning.

Formative Assessments

Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

NB: Marks from the management report and oral presentation to client will be adjusted from the group mark based on peer review.

The teaching methods used reflect the applied and practical nature of the module. These assessment methods are deemed appropriate in supporting the aims of the module and in the achievement of the intended knowledge and skills outcomes.

Formative feedback opportunities will provide a number of benefits:
• Developing their understanding of reflective writing to support their individual summative assessment
• Students will be able to practice the skills related to the summative client presentation
• Students will receive feedback and enable them to feedforward
