Aims

To develop practical experience of experimental techniques in a modern hydrodynamic laboratory

To learn the conduct and procedure for a towing tank test, seakeeping test and propeller efficiency test

To work in a team on practical experimentation

Outline Of Syllabus

Study an “experimental handbook” covering three facilities: Towing Tank, Cavitation Tunnel, Wind Wave Current Tank along with associated papers and documents (e.g. ITTC standards)
Week 1:
-       Day 1: Familiarization. Prepare a ship model for testing (scaling, ballasting, load cell, calibration)
-       Day 2: Complete a series of towing tank tests and create a resistance and power curve for the ship
-       Day 3: Prepare a barge model for seakeeping/stability testing in the Wind Wave Current Tank
-       Day 4; Complete a series of motion tests on the barge and produce RAO curves
-       Day 5: Complete a series of open water tests on a model propeller in the cavitation tunnel and produce a
KT-KQ-efficiency dataset
Week 2:
-       Complete data processing and produce a (PowerPoint-based) report presenting the results and discussing
the experimental methods and uncertainties

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The module is lab based to encourage a deep understanding of practical experimentation and team work. Online materials are required to support and extend from the learning in the lab. All lab work is supported by academics, demonstrators and technical staff.

Assessment Methods

The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Other Assessment
Description Semester When Set Percentage Comment
Report2M100Lab report
Formative Assessments

Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Description Semester When Set Comment
Oral Presentation2MEach group to present their results to module leader for feedback each day during the lab sessions
Assessment Rationale And Relationship

Knowledge of the concepts, processes and analysis methods in hydrodynamic experimentation
