Aims

The aim of the module is to provide understanding of and ability in the application of fluid mechanics in Civil Engineering, specifically including pipe flow, open channel flow and hydraulic machines.

These applications include: Pipeline design, pipe network analysis and design, performance characteristics of hydraulic machines, open channel flow, hydraulic jumps and forces on structures.

Outline Of Syllabus

The syllabus will cover a range hydraulic engineering challenges and solutions. The lectures will include:
-       Engineering Applications of Hydraulics
-       Resistance to flow
-       Pipeline design
-       Pipe network analysis and design
-       Hydraulic machines (pumps and turbines: performance characteristics, selection and installation)
-       Steady flow in open channels
-       Application of resistance equations
-       Rapidly varied flow
-       Gradually varied flow
-       Hydraulic jumps
-       Forces on structures

To impart the basic qualitative and quantitative understanding represented by the knowledge outcomes via a mix of self learning and formal teaching, including advance reading of course notes, formal lecture presentations and discussions/tutorials with active student participation.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

To assess the student’s grasp of the basic qualitative and quantitative understanding represented by the knowledge outcomes via a mix of formative in class NUMBAS tests and two computer based online exams both the width and depth of the student’s knowledge.

In line with the requirements of the accrediting body students are expected to develop a professional attitude. To meet this skills outcome, participation will be required in core elements of this module.

Study abroad students who are unable to return to Newcastle for the Semester 2 Assessment period would be required to sit an examination.
