Aims

This module builds on the fundamental structural theory taught in Stages 1 and 2 to include more complex analysis of structural elements and expand the theory to analysis of non-symmetrical cross-sections, statically determinate and indeterminate structures.

Outline Of Syllabus

Stresses and strains: Definitions of stresses, strains, tractions; Stress tensor; Differential and integral relations between stresses and forces, stresses and moments, strains and displacements; Equilibrium and compatibility.



Symmetric bending of beams: Pure bending; Moments of area; Flexural and shear stress distribution; Deflection in statically determinate and indeterminate beams; Euler’s buckling.



Torsion: Torsion of open and closed cross-sections; Stress distribution due to torsion; Membrane analogy; Rotation due to torsion.



General bending of beams: Stresses due to flexure; Location and direction of Neutral axis; Shear stresses due to bending; Distribution of shear stresses in thin-wall sections; Shear centres; Deflections and rotations of beams under applied loads.

The content of this module is largely theoretical and will therefore be taught through a combination of lectures (to impart knowledge) and problem solving sessions to apply this knowledge, develop problem solving skills, check understanding of the material and enable the students to receive additional help as required.
