Aims

A rigorous first level introduction to engineering approaches and problem-solving in mechanics (statics, dynamics) and thermodynamics as a basis for Stage 1 study in a broad range of engineering sciences and applications.

Outline Of Syllabus

"Mechanics (50% of the module)

Vector quantities and operations on vectors; Equilibrium of a particle: concurrents forces in a plane, parrallel forces in a plane, equilibrium equations, free-body diagrams, system of pulleys. Friction: Coefficients of Friction, angles of friction, equilibrium on an inclined plane. Equilibrium of a rigid body: resultant forces and moments, reactions and supports, statical determinacy and stability, Dynamics of particles: Newton's laws of motion, rectilinear motion, uniformly accelerated motion, motion on an inclined plane and projectiles.

Thermodynamics (50% of the module)

Physical quantities and equations, dimensions and consistency, unit system and SI, unit conversions; measurement of pressure and temperature, energy, work and power, heat and energy, specific heat, kinetic theory and ideal gas law, real gases, solids, liquids and gases (vaporisation, latent heat, saturated states); introduction to heat transfer; first law (conservation of energy), typical processes, engineering cycles; flow processes, heat exchanges."

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures convey the underlying engineering science and illustrate the physical and mathematical approaches required to apply this to a range of engineering-based problems. Tutorials assist the students to put into practice the principles and methods taught in the lectures, develop problem solving skills, check understanding of the material and enable the students to receive additional help as required.

Assessment Methods

The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners
