MAR8122 : Naval Architecture (Inactive)
- Inactive for Year: 2024/25
- Module Leader(s): Dr Simon Benson
- Owning School: Engineering
- Teaching Location: Newcastle City Campus
Semesters
Your programme is made up of credits, the total differs on programme to programme.
Semester 1 Credit Value: | 10 |
ECTS Credits: | 5.0 |
European Credit Transfer System |
Aims
To provide students with naval architectural techniques in the area of stability for ships and wave forces for fixed offshore structures. To give students an appreciation of the processes by which naval architectural requirements are generated and how physical constraints impact upon design.
Outline Of Syllabus
The module will cover: a general introduction to transportation, marine vehicles and their roles, ship geometry lines plan, curve of areas, equilibrium of floating bodies (submerged and floating in a free surface), properties of irregular shapes, areas, first and second moments, numerical integration, effects of changes of draught and trim, large angle stability, GZ curves and effects of changing hull geometry, flooding calculations, added weight, lost buoyancy, floodable length, permeability, inclining experiment, launching calculations, wave forces, morrisons equation, techno economic investigations
The module will include preschool reading, examples, an intensive school (five days), and a postschool assignment

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Students are encouraged to develop their knowledge and understanding of the subject by independent reading for which they are given guidance in the distance learning material (IKO1 - 3). This preschool study is reinforced via lectures during the intensive school itself. The use of design exercises during the intensive school and work-based assessments and application after the intensive school also enable the student to learn. Subject-specific skills (e.g. IT and project planning) are developed via the distance learning material, which is delivered by a web based system (Canvas). Cognitive skills (problem solving/decision making) are taught primarily through case studies and design classes, and developed through work-based assignments. Key transferable skills (communication, time management, ability to work alone etc) are developed through the work-based postschool assignment and via completion of the module itself, including the distance learning material (ISO1 - 9).
Assessment Methods
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners
Exams
Description | Length | Semester | When Set | Percentage | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Written Examination | 90 | 1 | M | 100 | Test to take place at end of block teaching week. |
Formative Assessments
Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.
Description | Semester | When Set | Comment |
---|---|---|---|
Written exercise | 1 | M | Post School Stability exercise with Maxsurf |
Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Knowledge and understanding are assessed via the unseen written examination and the written assignment. Subject specific and cognitive skills are assessed via design exercises and the module assignments, as are communication skills.
