Aims

To develop students’ ability to write and develop poems, as well as their capacity for critical insight into their work. Students will be expected to prepare a file of work consisting of around 10 poems and an accompanying essay.

Outline Of Syllabus

This module will be offered only in exceptional circumstances in lieu of a student's participation in 'MA in Poetry: Summer School 1' and only with the permission of the Degree Programme Director. This module will consist of a semester of independent study, plus three one-hour tutorials.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Offered in lieu of students' participation in the module 'MA in Poetry: Summer School 1', this module asks the student to prepare around ten poems for submission, whilst also asking them to consider their work critically in the accompanying essay. Over three one-hour individual tutorials, students will receive feedback and critique on their poems and constructive guidance on both revising their work and suggested reading for improving their practice.

Portfolio3A100A mixed portfolio of creative and essayistic work. The submission should not normally exceed 4000 words.
Assessment Rationale And Relationship

Although students may, with the tutor's approval, include some poems in this portfolio that were also submitted for the assessment of either 'MA in Poetry: Workshop 1’ or 'MA in Poetry: Workshop 2', any such poems must be substantially revised and reconsidered within the accompanying essay.
