From everyday needs to emergency support, here’s a breakdown of Newcastle’s local services.

Newcastle City Council 

The city council provides over 200 services ranging from recycling and waste collection to social care and community support. 

Emergency services 

In an emergency situation call 999 for police, fire or ambulance support.

In non-emergency situations call Northumbria Police on 101

Our on-campus police liaison officer is PC 2458 Gary White.

Our on-campus security team is available 24/7.

Health services

GP/Doctor

It’s important to register with a local doctor when you join us. You can do this online

The NHS app offers a simple way of accessing a range of health care services. Medical support is also available from NHS 111. You can use 111 online; the NHS app; or call 111

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides emergency, specialist and local community services.  

Newcastle’s three main hospitals are:

Newcastle University Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care

Our Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care team includes members from a range of faith and belief backgrounds. The team offers opportunities to practise your faith through:

  • worship
  • prayer
  • meditation
  • connecting with others who share your beliefs

It also has links with many of Newcastle’s main faith communities.

There are dedicated spaces on campus for quiet reflection and prayer. A Muslim prayer room is available in the King George VI Building for students and staff.

Transport

Newcastle is well connected across the city, regionally and nationally by a network of public transport. Student discounts and local travel passes make travel easy and affordable. 

Our International Airport offers regular flights to UK and international destinations. 

Shopping

Newcastle’s main shopping areas are centred around:

  • Grey Street
  • Grainger Town

Shopping complex Eldon Square is home to over 140 stores including:

  • high-street favourites
  • big-name brands
  • independent retailers
  • dining
  • leisure outlets

It’s also linked to Eldon Garden with its mix of independent boutiques and speciality retailers. 

Easily reached by bus or train, Gateshead’s Metrocentre is a mega-mall and entertainment complex with:

  • 270+ stores
  • 60 places to eat
  • a range of leisure attractions

Food markets

Grainger Market, in the city centre, is home to:

  • artisan bakeries
  • high-quality butchers
  • greengrocers
  • street food and world food traders

A regular outdoor Sunday market takes place on the Quayside selling fresh, local produce.

Across the city and its suburbs, world food stores sell a huge variety of African, Asian and European speciality foods.
