BSc Agriculture with Farm Business Management
My favourite thing about the course
I love my course and how I can complete modules with other courses. This means I look at subjects from a fresh angle influenced by my peers. When it comes to course modules my favourite module has to be Sustainable Animal Production Systems. It is really challenging how I think about our current agricultural livestock systems, and the lecturers are supportive and engaging.
NU Farms encompass mixed animal, arable and biomass operations with a commercial dairy and beef herd and a planned bed-and-breakfast pig enterprise. The visits to the farm have been invaluable to experience a real-life working farm and apply my knowledge and learning direct to industry.
As part of my course, we regularly visit the farm, where we hear from the farm manager, look at current projects, and discover the systems there.
Employability and support
When it comes to employability this course has helped me improve in several ways. Working with others as part of multi-disciplinary teams has helped improve my teamwork skills. It has also made me think outside the box when considering current industry issues.
Support at Newcastle University
Newcastle University has amazing pastoral support. From the wellbeing team to the disability advisers to the peer mentor scheme, each has played a critical role in my wellbeing. Their support and advice are superb. The support network around me at Newcastle University is brilliant.
I secured a placement year! The support from the Careers Service was amazing, I can't recommend them enough.
The PARTNERS programme
The PARTNERS programme gave me the skills to thrive in my first year. Make sure you engage with the programme. It gave me the study skills I needed to complete my first assignment. It meant I knew people when I started in September and that I was familiar with the campus. I also knew about all the resources available to me.
My advice to you as a prospective student
My advice to you would be, come with an open mind and be ready to take on every opportunity and learn from it. From placement years to internships, to trips to global opportunities, there are many exciting opportunities waiting for you.
There is more to Newcastle University than just studying your degree. I have had the opportunity to undertake an internship and experience a placement year. I have been to Fiji, I am a Course Rep, Student Ambassador, and Peer Mentor. Each of these individual experiences helps you build yourself ready for the big wide world and beyond.
