Meet John

BEng Geospatial Surveying and Mapping

About John

I came to the UK from India to study at Newcastle as the education system here has a strong focus on practical learning whereas back at home the courses seemed more theory-based.

The application process was smooth. Once I got the offer, paying fees and finding accommodation was easy thanks to the University’s support. I also receive the Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship award and the William Benedict Coleman Scholarship which help me fund my studies.

My course focuses on land and marine surveying applications. What sets the University apart in this area are the dedicated labs where you can use modern surveying tools like drones, laser scanners and GPS equipment. Everyone on the course knows each other well and the lecturers know every student by name.

Part of a friendly community

The University has beautiful historic buildings and abundant greenery, which creates a peaceful environment. The friendliness of the people along with the excellent facilities like the Language Resource Centre constantly reassures me that I made the right choice to support my future goals.

I joined the Music Society and became part of their voices group. It was my first time singing in a group like this. The practice sessions were always fun, and I really enjoyed being a part of it.

Exploring career options

There is a significant demand for surveyors. I had already planned to pursue a career in this area, but the University strengthened that decision by offering relevant modules, experienced lecturers, and cutting-edge technology.

Studying this degree has shown me Im not limited to just surveying though. While I havent finalised my future plans, Im confident that, with the support Ive received, Ill make good decisions. Ive used the Careers Service to create an effective CV, and the annual GENIE networking event helped me build connections.
