CEG8306 : Engineering Mechanics of Composites

  • Offered for Year: 2023/24
  • Module Leader(s): Dr Vladimir Vinogradov
  • Owning School: Engineering
  • Teaching Location: Newcastle City Campus

Your programme is made up of credits, the total differs on programme to programme.

Semester 2 Credit Value: 10
ECTS Credits: 5.0
European Credit Transfer System

The aim of the module is to enable students to understand fundamental principles of engineering mechanics of composite materials, to know basic methods to characterise, model, and predict mechanical properties of composite materials, and to design virtually engineering composites with given mechanical properties.

The basic concepts of composite materials are introduced. The elastic behaviours of unidirectional lamina and multidirectional laminates are presented and simulated by different models. Several failure criteria of laminates are introduced. Experimental methods used to characterise composite materials are presented and some practised.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Understanding of the mechanics theory is primarily imparted via lecture classes. Students are encouraged and expected to learn through independent reading and solutions to small group teaching problems. They are supported in this by the provision of an extensive set of notes, and small group teaching sessions.

Assessment Methods

The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Description Length Semester When Set Percentage Comment

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The content of the course includes mechanics theory, composite design method and experimental methods for composite materials. The exam is necessary to assess the students on mechanics theory of composite materials. Part of the exam is also used to assess the students' knowledge of composite materials testing following a laboratory demonstration.
