CEG8306 : Engineering Mechanics of Composites
- Offered for Year: 2025/26
- Module Leader(s): Dr Vladimir Vinogradov
- Owning School: Engineering
- Teaching Location: Newcastle City Campus
Semesters
Your programme is made up of credits, the total differs on programme to programme.
Semester 2 Credit Value: | 10 |
ECTS Credits: | 5.0 |
European Credit Transfer System |
Aims
The aim of the module is to enable students to understand fundamental principles of engineering mechanics of composite materials, to know basic methods to characterise, model, and predict mechanical properties of composite materials, and to design virtually engineering composites with given mechanical properties.
Summary:
The basic concepts of composite materials are introduced. The elastic behaviours of unidirectional lamina and multidirectional laminates are presented and simulated by different models. Several failure criteria of laminates are introduced. Experimental methods used to characterise composite materials are presented and some practiced.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Understanding of the mechanics theory is primarily imparted via lecture classes. Students are encouraged and expected to learn through independent reading and solutions to small group teaching problems. They are supported in this by the provision of an extensive set of notes, and small group teaching sessions.
Assessment Methods
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners
Exams
Description | Length | Semester | When Set | Percentage | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Written Examination | 120 | 2 | A | 100 | Unseen written examination. |
Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The knowledge gained in the module is expected to provide an understanding of the principles of design, manufacturing (M5) and analysis (M2, M3) of composite materials, as well as the application of those principles to engineering problems (M2, M3, M13). The written examination is a combination of short and more exploratory questions aimed to assess the full breadth and content of the module.
