This module aims to provide advanced knowledge, understanding and application of Life cycle Assessment (LCA) a decision making tool to guide environmental sustainability.

This module builds upon the modules CME8038 Sustainable Industry and CME8037 Sustainable Design and Manufacture although could be taken on a stand alone basis. It covers in detail the use of Life Cycle Assessment and uses real data to enhance knowledge of the practical application for the keys tools and techniques described though the use of case studies and workshops.

Outline Of Syllabus

Overview of Life Cycle Assessment, Detailed appraisal of the techniques as a tool to determine optimal environmental sustainability in design, use and disposal of products and service provision.

Validity and software package in LCA. Limitations of LCA. LCA is real life decision support.

Key knowledge and concepts are taught in supplementary lectures and these are put into practice through involvement in cases studies and workshops including material given as pre-sessional required reading. Some professional work on case studies is also required

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

Written exam in the form of a quiz will assess understanding of basic principles of LCA. Group Workshop to apply LCA techniques in practice. Group workshops which will be assessed both orally and written by a presentation and a written report. Ability to critically review published LCAs will be assessed through individual written report.
