Formative Assessments
Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The written examination assesses students’ understanding of the principles, methods, and workflows associated with data preparation, management, exploration, and communication within a more theoretical setting. The examination evaluates students’ ability to reason about computational approaches, structured data systems, querying methods, visualisation techniques, and communication of data-driven findings within theoretical and applied contexts. The examination primarily assesses conceptual understanding, analytical reasoning, and critical evaluation associated with computational and data management approaches, and is delivered as a standard two-hour written examination. (MLO1, MLO2, MLO3, MLO4)
The coursework assesses students’ ability to apply computational, analytical, and visualisation approaches within an applied problem setting. Students will submit code, a demonstration video, and a structured report of no more than ten pages in a question-and-answer format reflecting on approaches, workflows, and decisions made during the task. The coursework particularly emphasises the practical application of programming tools, management and processing of structured data, creation of effective visualisations, and communication of data-driven findings to different audiences within a realistic workflow context. The formative practical exercises provide opportunities for students to practise computational, analytical, and visualisation techniques and receive feedback in advance of the summative assessments. These activities support the development of skills required for both the examination and coursework components.
The assessment structure supports the development of both theoretical understanding and practical data workflow skills, enabling students to develop confidence in the preparation, analysis, visualisation, and communication of data-driven insights.
Alternative assessment:
For students with a Student Support Plan (SSP) who have alternative assessment as a reasonable adjustment and/or students with supported Personal Extenuating Circumstances (PEC), it may be necessary to set an alternative assessment as presented below. Due to the professional requirements of some programmes, alternative assessments may not be available even where students are eligible.
An oral examination comprising a 15-minute prepared topic followed by 15 minutes of questions from the overall module syllabus may be offered as an alternative to the written examination where appropriate.
