The module aims to provide students with an understanding of how materials are selected and manufactured in particular industrial applications. Examples from a broad range of industries will illustrate how this is achieved and provide practical insight to extend their basic knowledge of materials and manufacturing. Students will gain an understanding of the development of new materials for specific applications.

The module will also develop the student abilities in searching the literature, report writing and in making oral presentations based on their research.

Outline Of Syllabus

A range of topics of industrial significance will be introduced through a series of case studies. Each study will be presented through a series of lectures. Student groups will then be expected to undertake further research on specified tasks and to present their findings in the form of written reports, and, where appropriate, posters and presentations.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Knowledge and understanding of new and established materials is conveyed by a combination of lectures and additional information derived from directed research by the students themselves. The students will receive six lectures on a topic, then they will be directed to an area of the topic to study, after which they will check over that material in a tutorial session.

Students will use group work to aid study and will in addition be required to submit a technical report/presentation/poster on topics selected by the lecturers either individually or in groups.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

Knowledge and understanding are primarily tested by report/presentation/poster. These assessment methods assess students' critical thinking, research and reporting skills.
