Animal Science BSc

About Ayoub

I'm from Morocco and studying BSc Animal Science at Undergraduate level at Newcastle University. I chose Newcastle because it provides a well-rounded curriculum that blends theoretical knowledge with practical applications, preparing students for careers in agriculture, animal nutrition, and research.

The campus environment and the supportive academic community played a key role in my decision to study here.

My favourite thing about my course

I love how my course integrates scientific principles with real-world applications in animal health, nutrition, and genetics. The hands-on approach, including laboratory work and research projects, allows me to develop a deeper understanding of the subject while also gaining valuable practical experience.

My favourite module

Animal Feed Science and Technology is my favourite module. It explores sustainable feeding strategies, energy utilization, and nutrient partitioning in livestock. This module has given me insight into how nutrition impacts animal health and productivity, which is essential for improving sustainable agricultural practices.

A vibrant and welcoming city

Newcastle has a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, with a great balance between student life and cultural experiences. The city is rich in history and offers plenty of green spaces along with a variety of international cuisine, independent cafés, and the strong sense of community.

A course preparing me for the future

My course has equipped me with critical thinking, data analysis, research skills, and scientific writing. Additionally, I have developed teamwork and leadership skills through group projects and my role as a peer mentor. These experiences have enhanced my communication and problem-solving abilities, making me more confident in professional settings.

Facilities within the University

As part of my degree, I have access to specialist laboratories for animal nutrition and genetics research, as well as farms and field stations for practical animal science experience. The university also provides industry-standard software for data analysis, which is crucial for understanding genetics and nutrition models.

Outside of my studies

I'm a member of the Ecology Society, which aligns with my interest in sustainability and environmental conservation. Throughout the Ecology Society, I have participated in volunteering opportunities, environmental awareness campaigns, and networking events. Additionally, my role as a peer mentor has allowed me to support first-year students in their academic journey.

Supporting students

Newcastle University offers excellent pastoral support, including academic advisors, wellbeing services, and peer mentoring schemes. The career service has also provided valuable guidance on CV writing, interview preparation, and job applications.

I've found the university's wellbeing resources particularly helpful in managing workload stress.

My advice to prospective students

My advice would be to take full advantage of the practical opportunities and engage with lecturers and peers. Also, get involved in extracurricular activities and networking events to build connections and gain additional experience beyond your coursework.
