Meet Edna
Chemical Engineering BEng
An inspiring course with endless opportunities
What I love most about my course is how seamlessly all the modules connect, making the learning experience both engaging and manageable. This integration has deepened my interest in chemical engineering. I can see how fundamental principles of sciences like Maths, Chemistry, and Physics come together to solve problems.
Chemical engineers can work across a vast range of industries, from food and pharmaceuticals to technology and energy production. The problem-solving nature of the course constantly pushes me to think critically, be creative, and develop innovative solutions. It challenges me to grow not just academically but also personally and professionally.
One of the most exciting aspects of chemical engineering is its versatility.
Finding home in Newcastle
Newcastle offers a vibrant student life, making it an exciting and welcoming place to study. The city is known for its lively nightlife, friendly people, and strong sense of community, which really makes it feel like home.
There are plenty of places to explore and unwind in your free time, such as the Quayside, the coast, Jesmond Dene, St. James’ Park, and many others.
Newcastle is a vibrant city with a rich culture, and it is also affordable, which made it even more appealing to me as an international student.
Growing in confidence and skills
I have gained leadership and confidence through interactions at university and by taking on responsibilities in group projects and extracurricular activities.
Team-based assignments have strengthened my teamwork and collaboration skills, while demanding coursework has developed my problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making.
This course is shaping me into a well-rounded engineer, ready to make an impact in multiple industries.
Recognition for hard work
One of the highlights of my time at Newcastle was receiving the William Benedict Coleman Scholarship, awarded to the top-performing student in Stage 1. This scholarship, worth £2,000 per academic year, was not only a significant financial support but also a huge motivation to continue striving for excellence.
Making the most of university life
I’m currently a Student Ambassador, where I speak with prospective students and share my experience of my course. I’m also the Welfare Officer for the Belonging in Engineering Network, a supportive community that creates a sense of belonging for Black and global majority students. The network has been invaluable in helping me adjust to a new culture, offering both social support and career development opportunities.
Outside of engineering, I’m also part of the Christian Union Society, where I’ve built meaningful friendships and taken part in inspiring events that bring together faith, connection, and personal growth.
