Meet Jian
Communications and Signal Processing MSc
Part of a friendly community
Newcastle is a beautiful city. The first thing I noticed was there were fewer people compared to back home, but everyone here is so warm and kind. People will say hello to you even if you have never met each other before. Strangers are ready to help you too, whether that’s offering you a seat or carrying your luggage.
Everyone at the University, including professors, is so nice to you. It’s very easy to make new friends.
Practical support and social spaces
The dependent visa means that I can have my family with me while I study. The Visa Support team at the University helped me with my application. This was so useful as the policy had changed in 2024. The team also helped me with my eVisa application and student right verification.
ResLife has been amazing for meeting other international students. My daughter needs to practice piano and there is one in the social space she can use. There are also free crisps and drinks, table games, spaces to read, as well as other events.
Boosting my career prospects
I love studying my course. Communication is what helps bring us closer together. The modules are helping me dig deeper than I have before and add to my knowledge. We are also learning how to apply what we learn to different aspects of life which is a key part of network design.
I’ve already learnt so much and can’t wait to see what topics we explore next. I want to work as a technical leader or senior network engineer, and I know everything my lecturers cover will help me in the future.
