BSc Computer Science with a year in industry

Starting my journey at Newcastle

I chose Newcastle University because of its high academic standards and strong research opportunities. This aligned with my goal of excelling in Computer Science beyond my home country. The close-knit community and welcoming student atmosphere also made it the perfect environment to begin my university journey.

I was fortunate to receive the Vice-Chancellor’s Global Scholarship, worth £4,000 per year towards tuition fees. This support played a crucial role in easing my transition, especially as my mother is a single parent financing my education. The scholarship not only made my studies more affordable but also motivated me to make the most of this opportunity.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Global Scholarship not only made my studies more affordable, but also reinforced my commitment to making the most of this opportunity.

Part of a friendly community

Newcastle is a very affordable place to live, with most amenities within walking distance - whether it’s nightlife, shops, or the university campus.

On campus, I’ve found a second home in the Newcastle Dance Club. It’s a dynamic group that performs in shows and competes nationally across the UK. Being part of this society has helped me grow as a dancer, build strong friendships, and feel part of a supportive community.

Newcastle has the friendliest community I’ve ever experienced. Geordies are warm and welcoming, and there’s always someone around if you need help.

Exploring career options

In my first year, I was thrilled to secure a summer internship at the University of Florida, where I worked in Biomedical Engineering. My project focused on histological techniques for analysing knee osteoarthritis. This was an incredibly exciting opportunity so early in my degree. It’s inspiring to know that first-year students can access world-class research experiences like this.

My advice for future students

Don’t be afraid to explore all of your interests during university. The School of Computing offers great support for anyone who is struggling, and there are plenty of resources to learn from. I’d also recommend joining clubs and societies. You’ll make strong friendships and have a lot of fun along the way.
