A place where everyone fits in
I love the overall vibe at Newcastle University. Being a Muslim means I don’t drink, but there are so many activities that accommodate this. I’ve attended canvas painting socials and meet-and-greets hosted by various societies. Everyone was so friendly and respectful. It honestly amazes me how kind people can be.
One of my favourite memories was Freshers’ Week when I went to the societies fair to explore what I wanted to join. There were so many welcoming people. I got to wield Thor’s hammer, which was fun and unexpected!
I joined the Islamic Society to stay connected spiritually and to strengthen my relationship with God. They host events and organise bake sales and other fundraisers for charity.
I’m also grateful for the many prayer spaces at Newcastle University, which provide a convenient spot to pray between lectures.
I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to deepen my faith, as well as the free snacks and fun games every Friday.
Always something new and interesting to take away
The course involves lots of independent study, but there’s always plenty of support available if you need it. Lecturers are engaging and approachable, so even the more challenging topics are enjoyable.
One of my favourite parts so far was creating a 3D animation of a panda. It was such a fun way to apply what we’d learned and see how coding can be both technical and creative.
What really stands out to me about my degree is how much I learn from every lecture. I also like that some modules overlap with other degrees such as Computer Science or Physics. It’s intriguing to collaborate and hear different perspectives on the same topics.
I like spending time in the Philip Robinson Library because I genuinely enjoy the content of my degree. Assignments don’t feel like chores but rather like fun brain teasers to solve.
A city full of life
I love everything about the city, from doing my groceries to window shopping with friends after uni. It feels like the perfect place to study, and I have absolutely no regrets about choosing Newcastle.
It is a bit colder than I expected, but nothing a good puffer jacket can’t fix!
Another thing that surprised me was the uphill trek to the Urban Sciences building. It’s such a workout, but the view from the top is really nice, so the walk feels worth it every time.
Going to lectures doesn’t feel like a chore at all. It’s genuinely enjoyable, and even the walk to and from campus is scenic and refreshing.
Opening doors to different careers
My degree has strengthened my motivation to pursue a career in this field.
I took part in a virtual exchange with students from the University of Florida on Data Ethics. I now want to apply for a physical exchange to work on a Data Science research project in Finland, Florida, or Singapore.
Opportunities like these let me think beyond the classroom. I hope to work as a data scientist or a machine learning/AI engineer and my experiences will help me make a more informed decision about my future.
