Meet Farhad

Electrical and Electronics Engineering PhD

About Farhad

Hi, I’m Farhad, and I’m a PhD student studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Originally from Iran, I’ve lived in the UK for the past six years and chose Newcastle University as the perfect place to study for my degree.

My PhD focuses on developing advanced Integrated Motor Drive (IMD) systems that support the transition to a sustainable and green world. The research aims to design compact, efficient, and reliable electrical machines that contribute to Net Zero technologies by reducing energy losses and material usage. It’s an exciting opportunity to combine electrical engineering, innovation, and environmental responsibility to make a real impact on future energy systems.

Why choose Newcastle?

I chose Newcastle University because of its excellent Electrical Power Engineering group, world-class research facilities, and access to advanced laboratories such as the Power Group Lab. The University provides outstanding resources for experimental work, simulation, and prototyping, supported by highly ranked supervisors and professors. Its strong focus on innovative projects related to sustainable technologies and Net-Zero goals made it the ideal place for my research and professional development.

The EPSRC funding has allowed me to focus completely on my research without financial pressure. It has supported both my academic work and daily life, enabling me to access advanced resources, attend training, and collaborate with leading researchers in sustainable motor drive technologies. This support has been vital for my progress and wellbeing.

First impressions of Newcastle

The social atmosphere at Newcastle is very friendly and relaxed. I enjoy gathering with friends and colleagues for tea or lunch, sharing ideas, and discussing our research or daily life. We’re often invited to different activities by Student Societies from the PGR community: from casual meet-ups and drinks to hiking and social events, which I’m looking forward to taking part in soon. It’s a great way to connect and take a break from work.

I was surprised by how friendly everyone is, both in the University and the city. The academic staff are very approachable, and the overall atmosphere makes it easy to feel at home quickly.

A standout course

I enjoy learning and generating new ideas using the excellent research resources available at Newcastle. Having the support of outstanding supervisors helps me develop my skills and turn creative concepts into real engineering solutions.

I really value the supportive and inspiring academic environment at Newcastle University. The Power Group offers excellent collaboration opportunities and access to world-class research facilities. One of my favourite memories was completing my MSc dissertation on Switched Reluctance Motor design, for which I received a Distinction and was awarded the MSc Electrical Power Outstanding Project Student Prize.

Preparing for the future

My goal is to play an active role in developing innovative electrical systems that support the Net Zero transition and help create a greener world. I can see myself working as an academic researcher or engineer contributing to sustainable technologies.

Through my degree and the support of my supervisors, I’ve developed the skills needed to contribute to sustainable engineering and Net Zero technologies. The encouragement and opportunities here have truly inspired me to continue growing as a researcher and engineer.

Newcastle University has helped me shape a clear vision for my future by giving me the knowledge, confidence, and research experience to pursue my goals.

Advice for other students

You should choose this degree if you truly love what you do. It’s a demanding but deeply rewarding experience that helps you grow as a researcher, thinker, and problem-solver in the field of electrical engineering.

My top tip is to clearly explain your research interests and how they align with the University’s expertise when applying to University. The application process was clear and straightforward, and the admissions team was very helpful and responsive. If you ever have doubts or questions at any stage, you can contact the relevant person, and someone at Newcastle will always try their best to help you.
