Applying to us
Clearing entry requirements may be lower than those listed on course pages and below. Apply direct, call or chat to us to check specific entry requirements.
Typically we recognise grades 4,4,4 from three Senior Secondary subjects (excluding Liberal Studies and Chinese), in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) as comparable to AAB at A Level. Level 3 or above is required in all other subjects.
You may be considered for second year entry with a minimum GPA of 3.3 or 75% average or grade B overall in an Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma.
Language requirements
English will be the main language you use socially and for study. If it’s not your first language, we require HKSDE grade 5 in English with a minimum of grade 4 in each element.
For programmes requiring IELTS at 6.0, we require grade 4 overall with a maximum two elements at grade 3, and the rest at grade 4. This is valid only if you have taken the test within three years of the start of your course.
We accept IELTS One Skill Retakes.
Visa requirements
To study in the UK you’ll need to apply for a Student visa.
As part of your application you’ll need:
- a valid passport or travel document
- proof that you can support yourself in the UK, for example, bank account statements
You’ll also have to pay a healthcare surcharge. This allows you to use the National Health Service while you’re in the UK.
See our Visa and Immigration page.
Tuition fees and scholarships
A degree with us is lifechanging. It’s an investment in your future.
For each year of your degree you’ll pay a tuition fee. That amount can be found on our course profiles online.
How much you pay will depend on the degree you choose. You should also expect that fee to increase in each subsequent academic year.
Scholarship opportunities
To help fund your degree you could apply for a scholarship – either in Hong Kong or from us. Schemes include:
- Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme: funded by the Hong Kong Government, it supports students studying overseas
- External scholarships: offered by Hong Kong businesses, charities and higher education associations
- Newcastle University International Family Discounts: available if a close family member is studying with us or has graduated from Newcastle University
- Newcastle University subject specific scholarships

Newcastle's culture is really diverse. I’ve met people who grew up in the same town I did but I’d never met them until I arrived in Newcastle. It was a nice surprise knowing there are people who could make Newcastle my home away from home.
