Teaching and
Student Experience
At Newcastle, we provide quality teaching and a great student experience. Our awards, accreditations and student satisfaction survey results demonstrate our commitment.
Teaching quality
Newcastle University was founded in 1834, to educate the pioneers of the industrial revolution. Teaching was then, and is still, at the heart of our University. We educate for life, to develop and nurture successive generations of creative practitioners, clinicians, scientists, engineering and educationalists. We set them on the path to make their own mark on society.
With 5 QS Stars for teaching (2025), our high-quality teaching, learning and outcomes for students are assessed by the UK government in the UK Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). This was recognised with a Silver Award in 2023.
As a research-intensive Russell Group University, our research and teaching are closely linked. Learning is shaped by both the specialisms of our pioneering researchers and our links with national and multinational industries. This means that students are equipped for their future careers.
Our Education for Life 2030+ Strategy is an ambitious and transformational plan. It enables the University to adapt to the rapidly changing context of higher education. It will enhance the education experience of our students and prepare them to be visibly leading, global citizens.
National Teaching Fellowships
We are proud of our academic staff for the quality of teaching they give to our students. In recognition of individual excellence, and their outstanding contributions to teaching and enhancing student outcomes, 23 of our academics have received a National Teaching Fellowship.
Award-winning library service
Our University library is the only one in the UK to have received the Charter Mark five times. We have proudly held the Customer Service Excellence award since 1995, reflecting our dedication to outstanding support for students and the wider University community.
Triple accreditation for Newcastle University Business School
Newcastle University Business School is in the 1% of business schools worldwide to hold the triple accreditation. This shows our dedication to high-quality teaching, innovative research, and providing a great student experience:
- European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) under its EQUIS scheme
- Association of MBAs (AMBA)
- Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)
Whilst being firmly rooted in the region, our Business School has connections and partnerships across the globe, and links with over 300 businesses. We support and work with our partners to ensure a shared commitment to success. This in turn helps us nurture our students to ensure they are knowledgeable and confident in their futures.
Student experience
As a university with a global reputation, we work hard to make sure our students receive a great experience.
We challenge our students to become independent thinkers and agile problem-solvers. We work with each person to build the skills that they need. The services that we have available ensure that learners are supported during their time with us. We focus on both academic skills, personal development and wellbeing.
Our city-centre campus is based in the heart of Newcastle, a world top 50 and UK top 5 city in QS Best Student Cities 2026. We are a diverse community of students from over 130 countries. Our Students’ Union has been the hub of events, activities and campaigns, run by our students, for students, for over 100 years.
The high-quality student experience at Newcastle University is reflected in our rankings.
Newcastle University appealed to me because of the opportunities I would get, the diversity I would experience and the facilities I could use on campus.
