Masters of Architecture MArch
The course and workshops
The Master of Architecture degree at Newcastle allows everyone to discover the type of architect they want to become. Newcastle stands out by offering a wide range of academic expertise that supports students in developing their work in their own direction. The School of Architecture also has an excellent model making workshop, where theoretical ideas can be physically tested and explored.
For me personally, the standout aspect of the degree is the opportunity to physically make things, challenging the contemporary idea of architects sitting behind a desk. At Newcastle, we are encouraged to work hands on and engage directly with making. This has been particularly valuable for me through the Live Build research project.
Socialising
The social aspect of university has been central to my overall experience. Newcastle not only provides an environment in which to excel academically but also fosters a strong social community that makes the time spent here genuinely enjoyable.
I was part of Newcastle University’s Rugby League team, which was a great extracurricular activity and allowed me to connect with like-minded people. While playing for the team, I also took on the role of Treasurer for the club. This gave me the opportunity to develop leadership skills and take on greater responsibility in the day to day running of the club.
Exploring career options
Newcastle has helped me realise my future by giving me the confidence and skills to shape my own path within architecture. Through a combination of strong academic support, hands on making, and opportunities such as live build projects, I have developed both practical and critical thinking skills that will be essential in my professional career. The course has encouraged independence, collaboration, and experimentation, helping me better understand the type of architect I want to become.
It is difficult to say exactly where I see myself in the future, as I am currently fully focused on completing my Master’s degree. However, I believe Newcastle has equipped me with a strong set of skills that will allow me to succeed wherever my career takes me.
Advice for prospective students
A student should choose this degree because it offers a balanced approach to architectural education, combining strong academic thinking with hands on making. The programme encourages students to develop their own design identity rather than follow a single prescribed style, supported by a wide range of academic expertise. It also teaches students to view the world from a perspective that many never experience, by encouraging them to approach problems from multiple angles and think critically about their surroundings.
