Meet Fulong

Computer Science PHD

About Fulong

I chose Newcastle University because of its strong research profile in machine learning, the opportunity to work with leading academics like Dr Wanqing Zhao and Dr Matthew Forshaw, and its excellent research facilities.

The university’s focus on real-world impact and interdisciplinary collaboration also aligns well with my research goals.

Financial support

I received a scholarship from Newcastle University that covers my tuition fees. This financial support has been extremely helpful in easing my transition, as it allowed me to focus fully on my research without the added pressure of financial concerns.

My experience with student wellbeing at Newcastle

I’ve had access to a range of pastoral support services, including my academic supervisor, the postgraduate support team, and wellbeing services. These resources have been valuable in helping me manage both academic and personal challenges.

Regular meetings with my supervisor and the supportive research community have contributed to a positive and balanced PhD experience.

My favourite thing about my course

My course offers me the flexibility and depth for independent research. I really enjoy having the freedom to explore my own ideas while also receiving guidance from experienced supervisors. It’s intellectually challenging and rewarding at the same time.

My advice to you

Focus on building a strong foundation in programming and algorithms, but don’t be afraid to explore different areas within computing to find what truly interests you. Also, make use of the support available, ask questions, join communities, and practice consistently.

My favourite thing about Newcastle

What I enjoy most about Newcastle is its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The city is vibrant but also very manageable in size, making it easy to get around. I also love the mix of historic architecture, modern amenities, and access to nature, especially the riverside and nearby coastline. It’s a great place to live and study.

Preparing me for future employability

Throughout my course, I’ve gained a range of employability skills, including problem-solving, critical thinking, and programming. I’ve also developed strong research, communication, and project management skills through independent study and collaboration.

These experiences have prepared me well for both academic and industry roles.

Giving back to the University

I'm a student ambassador which supports new students at Newcastle University. It’s been a rewarding experience in which I’ve helped answer questions, share my experience, and guide new NCLers through their transition.

This experience has improved my communication and leadership skills while allowing me to give back to the university community.

My final words on my experience at Newcastle

It’s been a rewarding experience studying at Newcastle University. I’ve grown both academically and personally. I’m grateful for the supportive environment and opportunities I’ve had here
