Meet Chelsie

Computer Science (Game Engineering) BSc

About Chelsie

Hi, my name is Chelsie and I study Computer Science at Newcastle.

As a local mature student, it was important for me to find a research-led university with strong industry connections that was also close to home. Newcastle ticked all those boxes. The knowledge we gain is always up to date, and there are plenty of opportunities to network with the games and tech industries.

Support that makes a difference

I receive an Opportunity Scholarship, which has made it possible to focus on my studies without worrying about holding down a job. This funding has allowed me to take on ad-hoc shifts as a Student Ambassador and put my full energy into my course.

I’ve also benefitted from Newcastle’s wide range of support services, from having a personal tutor to disability support and access to online resources for mental health. It’s reassuring to know that counselling and wellbeing services are available whenever I need them.

A course with the right balance

The variety is what I love most. The course covers everything from data science to programming and mathematical principles, so there’s always something new to learn. As someone completely new to Computer Science, I find the challenge exciting and rewarding—I never have time to get bored!

Newcastle has everything: we’re obscenely friendly, the nightlife is legendary, and the coastline is just a few miles away.

Discovering Newcastle

Newcastle is my hometown, so I might be biased! But it really does have everything: friendly people, legendary nightlife, and beautiful coastline just a few miles away.

Developing career skills

My time management has improved massively, and the course has strengthened my critical thinking—a skill I first developed while studying philosophy. Group projects have also built my teamwork skills, and I’m looking forward to adding workplace experience with an internship next year.

Experimenting with side projects gave me confidence, even as someone from a humanities background.

My advice for future students

The classes I have taken have focused my thoughts about my career, and made me realise some of my deeper interests.

In the future, I want to work in Human Rights and support community-based activism, NGOs, and Non-profits in their quest for social justice. My choice was mainly influenced by the incredible lecturers who have fostered this interest and passion within me.
