Meet Stella

BSc Computer Science

About Stella

I chose Newcastle University because it has a strong reputation in computer science, supportive teaching staff, and a vibrant international student community. The city is also affordable and student-friendly, which makes it a great place to live and study.

My favourite thing about my course is the hands-on projects, which allow me to apply what I’ve learned and build real-world skills.

Financial support

I was lucky to receive the Vice-Chancellor’s Global Scholarship (VCGS) from Newcastle University, which provided a £4,000 tuition fee reduction. This financial assistance significantly eased my transition by alleviating some of the pressures associated with studying abroad.

The Scholarship allowed me to focus more on my academic pursuits and less on financial concerns, helping me settle into university life more smoothly.

Supporting my university journey

At Newcastle, I’ve accessed pastoral support such as the chaplaincy services and wellbeing advisers at Newcastle University. These services helped me manage stress and adjust better to life at university.

My advice to you as a future student

Start building your basics early. Practice coding regularly, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Join communities, work on small projects, and focus on problem-solving, not just memorising code.

My favourite thing about Newcastle

I enjoy how friendly and welcoming the people are in Newcastle. The city has a great mix of history, nature, and vibrant student life. Plus, everything is within walking distance, which makes it easy to explore.

Preparing for the future

Through my course, I’ve gained key employability skills like problem-solving, teamwork through group projects, time management, and technical skills in programming and software development. I’ve also improved my communication skills through presentations and report writing.

My interests outside of my studies

I participate in the Computing and Technology Society (NUCATS) at Newcastle University. It's been a great way to meet like-minded students, attend tech events, and improve my skills through hackathons and socials.

My plan for a summer internship

I plan to do a summer internship whilst studying at Newcastle. I want to gain real-world experience, improve my coding and teamwork skills, and get a better understanding of how the Computing industry works.

A summer internship is a great way to build confidence and boost my employability after graduation.
