Meet Anirudh

Microelectronics: Systems and Devices MSc

About Anirudh

Hi, I’m Anirudh from India. After studying in Manipal Institute of Technology, I wanted a postgraduate degree that was more practical than those offered in my home country. The course at Newcastle had modules relevant to my career ambitions, helping me dive deeper into areas I haven’t explored yet.  And getting the Vice Chancellor International Scholarship (PG) has supported my studies in an immeasurable way.

The Master's in Microelectronics is a great stepping stone towards a career in embedded systems/IOT or for entering the semiconductor industry. But before I talk about my course, I want to tell you my favourite memory of Newcastle, from my very first day.

I landed in the airport at night and got a taxi to near my accommodation, but I had no clue where to go next. It was late, it was raining and windy, and it was getting dark. As I was starting to get worried, a stranger walking by asked if I needed help. He helped me find my building and even helped me move my luggage. This kind gesture will be etched onto my memory long after leaving this beautiful city.

A warm welcome from the city

Being an international student can be expensive. So, receiving a scholarship of any amount is like a welcoming sign. It takes away a lot of pressure and lets me have money to spend on other things.

Ive found Newcastle to be a very friendly and vibrant city. Its full of life throughout the day and especially at night. People are eager to help if you need it and the city is very welcoming to international students.

The cost of living in this city is much cheaper compared to other UK cities which makes student life much more affordable.

I cant believe the weather. Its crazy! It changes in a span of few minutes. Ive heard stories about British weather, and now I know what theyre talking about. It helps to have an umbrella and an extra jacket with you before stepping out. Fortunately, there are very frequent buses and metros to all the nearby landmarks and major places across the city  with good student discounts on travel too.

Lots to experience on campus

The social life at Newcastle is very engaging. There are plenty of activities like giveaways and competitions. Youre highly likely to encounter something interesting during your week. Im passionate about cricket and the universitys cricket club is a great way to get more exposure to the game.

Ive also had positive experiences with the support services. The library service is great for the books and printing I needed for my coursework. And the careers team thoroughly checked my CV, giving valuable input to further improve it based on what the industry is looking for.

A practical, career-focused programme

Microelectronics at Newcastle had all the relevant modules for my career goals. And these are all very practical compared to the more theoretical and exam-based degrees in India. I have some work experience from my home country and I wanted a course that allowed me to dive deeper into areas that I hadnt explored yet.

Here in the UK…there is always a practical approach to the subject which makes learning a fun and exciting experience rather than a tedious and boring one.

Newcastle also has a very good reputation for research. I plan to go into industry, but if I come across a relevant topic that excites me, its good to know that I have the research skills to explore that further.

Microchips are the new oil

The course is designed to help students land a corporate job or pursue a career in research. The coursework and lecture materials are of a very high standard and ideal for anyone looking to get into the semiconductor industry or embedded systems.

The semiconductor industry is booming  this course is a stepping stone for new beginnings.
