Meet Ariana

Physics with Astrophysics BSc

About Ariana

I chose physics at Newcastle University because of the amazing facilities and professors teaching at Newcastle. As I'm doing the astrophysics branch of the course, I have a lot of options for my third-year modules and if I want to decide to continue with a masters which gives me flexibility.

Ariana

My favourite part of the course is being able to interact with other disciplines that may spark my interest in other areas.

The facilities here at Newcastle

Here at Newcastle, I find the facilities within the university great. I have really enjoyed using all the facilities, both within the Physics department and within the wider University. My favourite being the 24/7 library, where you can go and do your revision or assignments any time of the day.

Everything I need for success

The support offered by both the school and the university have both been very helpful. I have felt very supported from both my professors offering their office hours and help outside of schedules and from other students from societies alongside the university's counselling services. The layout of support shows me that the university cares about me and my studies and is encouraging me towards reaching out for help when I need it.

Thinking about the future

The physics course is in-depth enough to show me all the branches of physics I would like to study in the future, from quantum to astrophysics. However, it's still wide enough for me to decide if I want to apply my skills learned in physics to any other industry, as the course gives you the skills you need to achieve this. My time at Newcastle University has inspired me to decide to go into further studying after finishing my bachelors. I would like to continue with my masters and possibly my PhD one day.

Part of a friendly community

The physics community is very supportive with whatever branch or state of physics you're studying, or whatever you want to do in the future. They're here to help you to work out how you want to develop your skills in physics and I've had nothing but help from my professors and lecturers.

Outside of my studies

I am a member of the Astronomy Society and as part of our membership, we get to go to local observatories and do stargazing. Because we happen to live in the North-East, we can also do a lot of aurora borealis chasing and see the Northern lights sometimes within the region.

Being part of the astronomy society also has great benefits as part of your degree because you get to interact with other physicists, not just your lecturers, but people that are on your course from different years and get advice from them.

You get to interact with younger and older students and get life advice from them alongside your lecturers and do amazing things outside of physics that might inspire you to research new things or have other perspectives on your course.

A city that has it all

Newcastle is a perfect blend between city life and rural area, with its nice city centre and then other places around the North-East to visit. Hadrian's Wall or hiking areas are perfect for you to go and disconnect from the university life for a weekend.

My experience in a few words

My experience of Newcastle has been amazing. It's been engaging. I felt very well taken care of as a new student from both my Department of Physics and the wider university, through their counselling services and support with job applications or internships and so on.

My words of advice to you

I would advise future students to be brave. I know it's a big step, especially when you're moving away from home for the first time, but it's something you will not regret!
