Quality Education

Ensure inclusive and quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

17 Sustainable Development Goals are at the core of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. They represent a blueprint for peace and prosperity that all its member states adopted in 2015.

Find out more about how Newcastle University is working towards these goals to help create a better and fairer world.

Goal 4

Newcastle University is a Russell Group University. Our cutting-edge research shapes our teaching.

We are also increasing Education for Sustainable Development in our Learning and Teaching programme.

We support prospective students in getting to our university. We provide learning opportunities for those outside the University.

Our activity

Lifelong learning

Our libraries are available free of charge for students and colleagues. This includes physical resources and online resources too. Members of the community can also join our libraries, including school students and teachers and NHS workers.

INSIGHTS

This programme of public lectures is free for all. The programme is full of varied, informative, and stimulating lectures.

Graduate Ambassadors

Our Graduate Ambassador (GA) team visits schools and colleges and hosts students on our campus. The team runs events to educate and encourage young students to consider the different degrees at our university.

Individual departments of the University put on their own frequent events as well for school students. This includes:

  • Modern Languages
  • the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences
  • the libraries

Financial support

Support for current and prospective learners

We welcome talented students to our University through our Widening Participation programme. A team of colleagues, graduates and student ambassadors engage with and connect with students at schools and colleges.

The team consider the student’s background when reviewing applications. This way, their academic achievements are set in the context of their circumstances.

Scholarships and bursaries

Financial support is available for prospective and current students. We have a range of scholarship opportunities to enable students to study with us. We also have financial support for students when they have joined us.

We also have specific support routes for asylum seekers and refugees. We can offer full scholarships, bursaries and non-financial support around well-being and socialising.

Curriculum

Education for Sustainable Development is a focus of Learning and Teaching at Newcastle University.

We are increasing global challenges content across taught programmes. These equip our students to be globally and culturally aware, and also socially responsible.

In a recent case study, we embedded links to the UN Sustainable Development Goals within biosciences teaching.

Russell Group

Newcastle University is part of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities. Our world-class research shapes the curriculum and teaching. Top academics are passing their knowledge and expertise on to students.

We also have strong links to external partners like government and industry. This opens up work experience opportunities within degree programmes.
