Your university adventure starts here

Congratulations on choosing Newcastle University! We are really looking forward to welcoming you to campus.

We want to make the transition from your home country to the UK as easy as possible. Here is a simple guide to some of the things you need to do before you join us in September.

1. Apply for accommodation

We want you to have a great experience living with us, that starts from the moment you apply for your accommodation.

Want to know more about where you’ll live?

All our residences have unique characters and offer affordable accommodation in safe, vibrant and diverse communities.

2. Apply for your visa

To study in the UK you will need a Student visa. To apply for a visa you will need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). This is a unique reference number that we will send you.

3. Book Meet and Greet

Worried about arriving in the UK? Book our Meet and Greet service and we will be at Newcastle International Airport to welcome you when you land.

We will also arrange for a taxi or bus to your accommodation, or a drop-off location nearby, free of charge.

4. Register with us

We will send you details of how to register online as a student with Newcastle University. You will be asked to:

  • check your student data
  • confirm your course details
  • upload a photograph of yourself for your student smartcard

You may need to pay, or arrange to pay, your tuition fees to complete your registration.

5. Pack for university

To make packing easier, check out our suggestions about the personal and practical items you’ll need to bring with you.

Although all our accommodation is well-equipped, you will need bedding and some kitchen essentials. However, you can easily pre-order what you need or buy it when you arrive.

As a Top 10 UK city for affordability (QS Best Student Cities 2025), Newcastle has a great range of shops offering quality goods at competitive prices.

Need more advice? We asked our students for their top 10 suggestions. Read what they had to say and where you can buy the things you need.
