What I enjoy most about my degree
This degree is a chance to nourish and grow your artistic practice within a supportive environment of peer and tutors, with the addition of incredibly strong art history lectures. This helps to inform and reflect on the art world and your own practice.
I love my studio space, a place that I have access to throughout the week to create whatever I want to. The lectures are also so interesting and have helped me to gain a greater understanding of arts place within society.
The sense of community on the course is incredibly strong (backs up its high ranking), making it even more enjoyable.
I also love it when big events like the degree show and the postcard auction happen and the whole fine art community shows up.
What I love about Newcastle
I was surprised at how strong the art scene is here. Before I came, I knew about the Baltic and the Laing Gallery, but I have discovered so many smaller galleries and artist communities since moving here.
I also love how much green space there is for a big city. There are many beautiful parks, such as Leazes and Heaton park as well as lovely walks through Jesmond Dene and down into Ouseburn.
Fine art is an incredibly social course, with spaces like the Art café being a great hub to connect.
My top tips for applying
Make sure you show your dedication to art. This can be done through a strong studio practice with lots of experimentation, but also through doing projects outside of your course, for example, I put my artwork up in a local pub to sell. This could also include taking your art outside of the studio.
Newcastle has helped me realise my future
Through visiting artist's talks I've been able to see many different futures that I could take, which could be artist to curator to critic. Although I'm not 100% sure what I would like to pursue yet, it's helped me to discover what interests me most in art, which tends to be towards political art and how art engages in world politics.
