Modern Languages PhD
Part of a community
I have a very personal and cherished memory. During my PhD studies here, I became a mother to a lovely daughter. I was deeply moved by the incredible support I received during that time. My supervisor was extremely supportive, and the School even tailored a specific support plan based on my situation. This experience allowed me to truly feel the humanistic care and inclusivity of Newcastle University. It wasn’t just about academic growth, but also about being part of a community that genuinely cares for its students.

Support from research funding schemes
I have received support from the university's research funding schemes, which have been vital for both my academic events and my own doctoral research. I have received continuous support from the School of Modern Languages Doctoral Research Fund (receiving awards in both 2021 and 2025) and the Newcastle Doctoral College Research Enhancement Funds (£1,622 in 2025). These funds have been instrumental in supporting my participation in academic events.
Doing a PhD in the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University is a journey that balances rigorous academic research with incredible human support and professional opportunity. On a personal level, the university's support system is incredibly attentive. I enjoy the fact that my PhD at Newcastle is a perfect balance between deep intellectual exploration and dynamic, practical engagement.

Most importantly, I was awarded the China Scholarship Council Newcastle University Scholarship in 2020. This substantial funding was comprehensive, covering both my tuition fees and a living allowance. It provided me with four years of long-term financial security, allowing me to fully immerse myself in my research from the very beginning of my studies in September 2020, free from the distraction of financial stress.
The application process was straightforward, but it required being proactive and doing some research beforehand. For me, it wasn't just about filling out a form; it was about finding the right academic home for my project. Find a supervisor, send your proposal, then apply online. This approach ensures you have support within the department before your application even hits the admissions desk.
What the future holds
I envision a long-term future for myself within the Higher Education Academy. I hope to take on a role that helps students to grow, whether that be through teaching, research, or administrative support. My core goal is to support students, guiding them just as I have been supported during my time here at Newcastle.
The China Scholarship Council Newcastle University Scholarship (covering tuition and living costs) allowed me to focus on my growth. On a personal level, the tailored support plan I received from my supervisors when I became a mother at my second year of PhD showed me the profound impact of compassionate education. This experience inspired my core ambition: to become a university professional who not only conducts research but also genuinely guides and cares for students, paying forward the support I received at Newcastle.
You should pick this degree because it offers a combination of rigorous academic training, professional empowerment, and exceptional institutional support.
