Psychology, BSc Honours

Finding my independence

I chose to study in the UK because I wanted to challenge myself by experiencing a new culture, adapting myself into a new city. I also wanted to become more independent while gaining an international education.

I’ve grown up with the mentality of trying to go out of my comfort zone. I like meeting new people from different backgrounds, and developing personally and academically in an international environment.

I wanted somewhere where I could become more independent, meet people from different cultures, and have fulfilling experiences outside the university.

A city, a community and a degree

I chose Newcastle University because it offers a combination of academic quality, a strong Psychology programme, and the student experience I was looking for. As a founding member of Russel Group, Newcastle has a strong reputation for research and academic excellence.

Newcastle is also a very student-oriented city. It has a large international community, many societies, sport clubs, and a city centre campus where everything is within easy reach. I wanted somewhere where I could become more independent, meet people from different cultures, and have fulfilling experiences outside the university.

The psychology of choosing Psychology

I was particularly attracted to Psychology at Newcastle because the degree is BPS accredited and research led. It covers a broad range of areas while also providing opportunities for students to explore more specialised interests.

What stands out most to me about the Psychology degree at Newcastle is how much it combines academic knowledge with practical and research skills. I especially like that Psychology is so broad. This has allowed me to explore different areas and discover how my interests can connect to my future career.

We develop research and data-analysis skills and learn how to critically evaluate evidence. This has made me more analytical and curious.

I enjoy learning about why people think, feel, and behave the way they do. I find it really interesting to understand the different factors that influence human behaviour and then see how psychological theories can be applied to real-life situations.

What stands out most to me about the Psychology degree at Newcastle is how much it combines academic knowledge with practical and research skills.

Getting involved and giving back

Student societies are a very important part of the university experience. They are a great way to meet people, make friends and connect with others who share similar interest. This year, I am particularly excited because I will be taking on the role of Welfare Officer for the Latino Society.

I am looking forward to helping create a welcoming and supportive environment for students. I want to help organise activities and help bring the Latino community at Newcastle together.

Coffee and connections

I make the most of the social side of university by spending time with my friends. I enjoy going out for food or coffee, exploring Newcastle, going shopping, and trying new activities around the city.

I think that one of the best things about Newcastle is that there are so many ways to have fun and make memories outside of studying. This could involve exploring into the city, joining activities or simple enjoy your time with the ones you like the most.

Tailored career support

One of the areas of student support that I found particularly valuable is the Careers Service. I have used it quite a lot throughout my degree, especially for preparing for internships and graduate jobs. They have helped me multiple times with CV appointments, and preparing applications and information sessions. They've helped to develop my interview skills and consider the different career paths available to me after graduation.

What I really appreciate is that the support is personalised. I'm interested in areas such as HR, marketing and consumer psychology. It has been helpful to have guidance on how to present my Psychology degree in a way that is relevant for different industries. It makes me feel much more confident entering the graduate job market and planning my next steps after university.

It has also helped me to find opportunities to gain practical experience. This year, I am going to be taking part in START UP internship alongside my studies. This will be another opportunity to develop my professional skills and gain experience before graduating.

The university has given me the opportunity to grow academically and personally, become more independent, and connect with people of different backgrounds.

More than a degree

I've had a very positive experience at Newcastle University. I really appreciate the academic environment, the quality of teaching, and the opportunities available for students outside their studies.

I also really enjoyed the international and diverse community, as well as the student atmosphere in Newcastle. The university has given me the opportunity to grow academically and personally. I've become more independent, and connect with people of different backgrounds.
