Meet Stuart

Doctor of Education EdD (School Governance)

About Stuart

Living in Gateshead and working as a teacher, I chose Newcastle University as the place to complete my Master’s and now my EdD as a mature student.

I was impressed by the vibrancy of the campus, the accessible nature of the courses and the welcome from staff and students.

Collaborating with a diverse cohort

I have found the social aspect on a day-to-day basis with my fellow doctoral students one of the most beneficial aspects of my time at Newcastle University.

I enjoy learning, supporting and sharing time with other likeminded individuals from other learning cultures. It is excellent to be able to spend so much of my time surrounded by interesting and motivated people.

Challenging myself

I feel fortunate that at 60+, I have  the opportunity to continue to learn and develop in a stimulating environment. Merely to enter the campus was exciting and I never lost that sense of wonder that this opportunity was available to me. I thoroughly enjoyed undertaking the EdD and enjoyed the format and the shape of the doctorate. I would recommend it to anyone who plays a part in the education system.

The course can be challenging but what stands out is the supportive environment and working on campus every day is a huge privilege.

Looking to the future

I'm approaching retirement age now, but I fully intend to immerse myself in school governance again, spread news of my research and look to ways in which I can do this through professional governance organisations.
