Meet Runzi
Marine Technology MPhil, PhD
Newcastle is a city with a long history in shipbuilding and marine technology. There used to be many shipyards along the River Tyne, and this strong maritime heritage creates an excellent environment for studying naval architecture.
Access to world-class experimental facilities and a curriculum featuring cutting-edge technical knowledge has enabled me to validate my research under conditions that closely mimic real-world environments.
A vibrant and welcoming city
The Western world has a different culture compared to the East; the UK has a rich culture and an excellent education system. Studying in the UK therefore provides a valuable opportunity to experience these differences compared to my home country, China. I believe this experience helps me develop a broader and more comprehensive way of thinking, which benefits both my academic learning and my personal growth.
The football culture in the city is impressive. When there is a match, the stadium, streets and pubs are full of fans supporting Newcastle United, creating an incredible atmosphere.
Future career
The funding provided by the Marine, Offshore and Subsea Technology Group has been instrumental in my studies, as it fully covers my PhD tuition fees. This support has allowed me to focus entirely on my research without financial strain.
Following the completion of my PhD, I aim to enter the marine industry as a specialised Engineer. I am particularly interested in roles that allow me to apply my expertise in hydrodynamics to address real-world engineering challenges, developing a more sustainable future.
Student life at Newcastle
The University frequently organises seminars, tours and talks delivered by industry professionals in the marine and offshore sector, which gives us valuable opportunities to learn about current developments related to our field and build connections.
The university’s robust partnerships with the marine and offshore sectors have provided invaluable insights into contemporary industry challenges, ensuring my academic development is perfectly aligned with my future career as a marine engineer.
