Meet Fabiana

Media and Public Relations MA

From Peru to Newcastle

I grew up in Peru, and studying abroad was something I imagined for a long time. I was interested in the academic opportunities, and I wanted to challenge myself, grow, and build a future that felt bigger.

When I was applying, I remember feeling that studying in the UK would not just give me a degree, but a completely different life experience.

I wanted to learn in a place where I could meet people from different cultures, improve my English and become more independent. I wanted to prepare myself for a career with a more global perspective.

I chose Newcastle University because after visiting, I could really imagine myself here. When I arrived in Newcastle, the city felt friendly, the people were warm, and the university didn’t feel intimidating. I remember walking around and thinking how welcoming it felt, even though I was so far from home. I chose Newcastle because it felt right in my heart, not just on paper.

A home away from home

People here are genuinely so friendly and welcoming, and that means a lot when you are far from home.

My favourite memories are honestly the simple ones. Sitting with my friends, all of us from different countries, talking about our cultures and families. I love Newcastle University because it has given me more than a degree. It has given me friends, confidence, independence, and a little home away from Peru.

I love that Newcastle feels alive, but not overwhelming. It has energy, personality, nights out, cute cafés, amazing views, but still feels cosy somehow.

Newcastle is such a fun student city because there is always something to do, but it still feels friendly and easy.

University has not only been lectures and deadlines, but it has also been meeting people who make ordinary days feel special. Newcastle has given me memories, friendships, and a life here that feels warmer than I ever expected.

You are not just studying communication, you're learning how to use it. It pushes you to think outside the box, trust your ideas more and imagine the kind of impact you could have in the real industry.

Studying Media and Public Relations

My degree is for people who love ideas, stories, media, culture and understanding why people think the way they do. You look at real campaigns, social media, news, brands, audiences and public opinion. You start to understand how communication works in real life.

What I really like is that it gives you space to be creative, but it also teaches you how to think properly about your ideas. You learn how to plan campaigns, write in different styles, understand audiences, research, analyse media and explain why your ideas matter. The best part is that it feels connected to the real world. You are not just studying communication, you're learning how to use it.

The lecturers are amazing, helping me with the academic side and also my own confidence. This degree stands out because it feels creative, useful and personal. It has helped me think bigger, trust my own voice, and feel like my ideas can actually mean something.

This degree is perfect for someone who has ideas but wants to learn how to make them stronger. It gives you space to be creative, but it also teaches you how to think with purpose. You learn that a good idea is not just something that looks nice. It needs to understand the audience, tell a story, create emotion and actually mean something.

You bring your own background, opinions and way of seeing the world into the work, and that makes the course feel personal. It pushes you to think outside the box, trust your ideas more and imagine the kind of impact you could have in the real industry.

Choose this degree if you want something creative, practical and human. Choose it if you want to understand the world better, not just study it.

Tips for applying

Newcastle’s process felt clear, and whenever I needed information, I could find guidance or ask for help. My biggest tip is to start early. Do not leave everything until the last minute because it is much easier when you have time to think properly about your application.

Explain why you care about the course, what made you choose Newcastle, and what you hope to do with the opportunity.  If you are unsure about something, email the university or contact the admissions team. It is better to ask than to stress in silence. Choose Newcastle not only because of the course, but because you can see yourself here.
