Aims

Security attacks can target modern systems, possibly impacting the information managed by such system. It is crucial for system users, designers and maintainers to learn how to detect, prevent and respond to these attacks. This module aims to cover a broad range of information and system security concepts, focusing on the underpinning theory behind attacks and mechanisms, supported by up-to-date research papers, as well as some real-world examples.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This module follows a blended approach: lecture material is delivered asynchronously, with weekly releases, and students are expected to attend monthly in-person workshops and weekly online sessions to engage with the module instructors on the material. Students are also expected to complete weekly formative quizzes and to conduct a group-work formative assessment of a similar nature to the summative assessment.

Assessment Methods

The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The two summative reports enable students to reflect on information and system security issues/mechanisms in different contexts, including work-place experience when relevant, and assess the knowledge learnt over the whole module. Asynchronous and in-class activities will focus on assessment preparation.
