To develop knowledge and understanding of:

A1 Fundamentals of ship propulsion regarding design and performance
A2 Propeller design methods and principles of unconventional propulsors
A3 Methods of estimating ship resistance and power requirements
A4 Basic matching of engine and propeller
A5 Propulsion (machinery) systems and selection, including electrical power and propulsion, power take- off systems and fuel efficiency.

Outline Of Syllabus

Ship resistance estimates: ship drivetrain and various efficiencies/loss; resistance components; methods used to estimate different resistance components; effective power prediction using statistical and graph methods.

An overview of hydrodynamic design of propeller(s); Kt and Kq vs J curves; propeller performance with inflow wake; standard series propeller design; unconventional propellers and propeller cavitation.

Propeller-engine matching and off design conditions propulsion machinery systems; power-take off systems; various propulsion system design case studies.
General principles for the measurement of changes in speed-power performance.
Fundamentals of economic analysis of ship systems.

Design aspect of Marine Engineering Systems; Derivation of mathematical models for basic mechanical, fluid power, thermal and electrical systems; standard first and second order transfer functions.

Basic elements of an electric propulsion system, Single and three-phase power calculations, DC and AC electric motor operation, Power electronic devices and basic converter circuits, Basic propulsion control configurations.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The module will consist of online lectures, guided reading and tutorials which provide students with a structured format to assimilate the knowledge content and define the scope of each of the syllabus topics (IKO1-7). In the tutorial sessions (present in-person and synchronous online)the students are provided with the opportunity to gain oral feedback from the lecturing staff.

The independent study time is essential for students to work through the lecture material, in their own time and at their own pace (ISO1-9).

Should the public health situation require it, the present-in-person teaching activities will be replaced by synchronous online sessions.

Students should consult their timetable for up-to-date delivery information.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The examinations afford students an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and possession of subject specific and key skills. The medium also allows students to demonstrate critical thinking as well as demonstrating numeracy and literacy and associated cognitive skills.

The coursework assesses their knowledge without a tight time limit.

Should the public health situation require it, the planned examination scheduled to be completed present-in-person will be replaced by an open book, online examination to be completed within a defined 24 hour period.
