Tour Our City

Newcastle is a big city in a small space and it has a sizeable student population. It's easy to get around and is well connected with the Metro rail network running across the city, from the airport, to the North Sea coast.

Central Arcade

The elegant Edwardian Central Arcade is worth a visit, with its glass barrel-vaulted roof and tile floor as much of an attraction as the shops within it.


Eldon Square

Eldon Square is the city's main shopping centre, within a five-minute walk from the University campus. It's one of the UK's largest city-centre-based shopping centres, with over 100 shops, including large department stores John Lewis, Fenwick and Debenhams.


Exhibition Park

Exhibition Park is next to campus. As well as hosting many outdoor events, there are outdoor sports facilities, a café, picnic areas, a skatepark and a boating lake.


Grey's Monument

Grey's Monument is the hub of the city centre and a popular meeting spot, overlooking the Grainger Town area of the city.


Haymarket Metro Station

The Metro is Newcastle's light rail system, connecting the city to the airport, coast and nearby suburbs. Haymarket is the closest Metro station to the University, right opposite the campus.


Millennium Bridge

The award-winning Gateshead Millennium Bridge connects Newcastle Quayside and Gateshead Quays arts quarter. The bridge's unusual tilting action, unique in the world, earned it the title the Blinking Eye Bridge and cemented its iconic status in the city.


Newcastle Central Train Station

Newcastle Central Station is the city's mainline railway station, situated 15 minutes (on foot) from the University campus. The station also connects to the Metro Rail system, which can be used to travel to the University's nearby Metro station, Haymarket.


Newcastle Theatre Royal

The Grade I listed Theatre Royal on elegant Grey Street regularly plays hosts to West End musicals and award-winning ballet and dance. Student discounts are available on many productions. There are lots of cafés, bars and restaurants around this area of the city.


Northumberland Street

Just two minutes' walk from campus is Newcastle's busiest shopping street, Northumberland Street. This pedestrianised area is home to many big name brands and department stores, including a flagship Marks and Spencer store, Fenwick, TK Maxx and many more.


Quayside

The Quayside district, around the Tyne Bridge, is home to some of the city's finest architecture. Many of the former merchants' homes captured here have been converted into hotels, bars and restaurants, making it one of the most popular nightspots.


The Gate

The Gate leisure and entertainment complex is a five-minute walk from the University campus. There are a range of facilities under one roof including restaurants, bars, a casino and a 16-screen state-of-the-art cinema.


The Glasshouse Gateshead

The £70 million Glasshouse is an international music centre on the banks of the River Tyne. Entry to the building is free and they host regular performances by musicians from around the globe. This building was previously known as the Sage.
