Aims

To consolidate theory of plane surveying, geospatial data handling and mapping with practice.
To give experience in organisation and teamwork on a substantial exercise. To introduce plan design and drafting.
To introduce concise and unambiguous scientific writing.
Students will be undertaking a mapping exercise related to their degree course, enabling them to put mapping skills into practice.
The mapping fieldcourse is core element for the degree courses syllabus and compulsory for all Geospatial Engineering students. It consolidates all surveying and geo-data knowledge and skills acquired in Semester 1 and Semester 2 and enables students to put those skills and knowledge into practice.

The fieldtrip is scheduled during the Easter vacation will be subsidised by the School, but each student will be expected to pay a minimised cost between £200 and £250 for this fieldcourse.

Outline Of Syllabus

Introduction - risk assessments - importance of teamwork - survey planning - primary and secondary control surveys - detail surveying – mapping - geospatial data handling and analysis - cartography - report writing, career planning.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The fieldcourse is designed to complement CEG1703 lectures and practicals by placing the theory and surveying practice learnt on that module into the context of an integrated topographic surveying project. It further uses skills and understanding of mapping data provided to the students in CEG1702.Students undertake relevant risk assessment, teamworking, and cartographic production exercises as well as consolidating their plane surveying and geo-data handling skills. A series of evening small group teaching activities facilitate progress through the duration of the fieldcourse.

Lectures support the fieldcourse activities and guide the students through the fieldcourse. Lectures will allow the students to obtain new materials related to fieldcourse activities and help to discuss data and skills during the fieldcourse activities.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The module is 100% coursework. This consists of several elements, including group reports and plots, individual critiques and plots, and staff and student peer assessment as well as attendance. The group submission includes a report of the group's activities, traverse diagrams and computations, fieldbooks and A1 mapping of site detail and contours.

The assessment elements check the students understanding of mapping and surveying methodologies and how the theory and skills of surveying is applied in the field. It assesses the students ability to apply mapping and surveying techniques, and how to use data acquired in the field to calculate coordinates. Additionally, it assess the ability to translate coordinates into plotting and the mapping skills of students.
