Hai District Ageing and Frailty Study

Hai District Ageing and Frailty Study

  • Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing
  • Partnered with: Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, UK; Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, Tanzania; Mawenzi Regional Referral Hospital; Machame Lutheran Hospital, Hai district; Hai District Hospital, Boman’gombe, Kilimanjaro; London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK
  • Region: Northern Tanzania

The study aims to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of frailty in older adults. Frailty can be described as an increased vulnerability to adverse events. The prevalence and outcomes of frailty in rural Sub-Saharan Africa are not known and this research seeks to address this knowledge gap.

How we are meeting this challenge

  • Conducting cross-sectional survey in the rural Hai district, using four different established methods to measure frailty.
  • Qualitative interviews and focus groups exploring the meaning of old age frailty in context will also take place.
  • Carrying out a longitudinal follow-up at 12-18 months to measure the outcomes of frailty in this setting.
Settlement in Tanzania.

Who will benefit

This research is relevant to the international health community who have prioritised healthy ageing globally as an important aim for universal health coverage.

In Tanzania, the Ministry of Health and National Institute for Medical Research are stakeholders, with an interest in the findings from this project, which may help influence health policy. Locally, older people and their families and care-givers, as well as community leaders have interests in the research and have been involved in workshops both for data validation and dissemination.
