Aims
This module provides students with the underpinning scientific and clinical knowledge to assess and interpret extracranial peripheral arterial and venous ultrasound investigations; to safely contribute to the diagnosis and screening of peripheral vascular disease.
Outline Of Syllabus
Extracranial disease: management, investigation, and diagnostic ultrasound in clinical practice.
Venous disease: management, investigation, and diagnostic ultrasound in clinical practice.
Peripheral arterial disease (lower limb, upper limb, abdomen): management, investigation and diagnostic ultrasound in clinical practice.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The knowledge is delivered via a series of present in person lectures, and non-synchronous lectures. Lectures are supported by small group discussions of protocols and case studies, demonstrations and practical activities. Students will gain the knowledge required to interpret ultrasound images, write reports, provide complex scientific information to inform multidisciplinary teams of the diagnostic result; and critically evaluate ultrasound scanning protocols, and screening programmes. Independent reading and research will provide necessary skills for critical evaluation of national guidelines and safe scanning practices.
Assessment Methods
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Written exercise | 1 | M | 50 | 3000 word written exercise |
Assessment Rationale And Relationship
A written exercise assesses critical thinking skills and the application of knowledge to realistic clinical scenarios and service developments. The written assignment provides an opportunity to assess the student’s appraisal skills of protocols and guidelines, and the ability to demonstrate scientific writing to convey complex scientific information.
The written examination assesses the student’s ability to critically appraise diagnostic and treatment options; interpret images and spectra; confidently and safely diagnose; and differentiate between the range of vascular diseases.
In order to pass this module candidates must achieve a mark of at least 50% in the written examination.
