Aims
A1: To provide an understanding of issues relating to material selection and corrosion in subsea systems.
A2: To explain fundamental characteristics of internal flows and their effects.
A3: To introduce different materials and their use in subsea engineering.
A4: To discuss the main manufacturing process and effect of welding on material properties.
Outline Of Syllabus
1. General principles of material selection (3 hours): Overview of the principles relating to the selection of materials. Identification of the main materials and material classes used in the offshore and subsea industry.
2. Metallic/non-metallic materials (5 hours): Properties of mild and stainless steel, and corrosion resistant alloys, the use of non-metallic materials and composite materials in the subsea industry.
3. Internal flows (8 hours): An overview of internal flow characteristics, their role and effects in subsea applications and the fluid-structure interaction effects in pipe vibration analysis and design. 4. Principles of corrosion (4 hours): An introduction to corrosion fundamentals.
5. Welding technology in subsea systems (4 hours).

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Directed study and the formal lectures will provide an effective method for students to assimilate the knowledge content, define the scope of the syllabus topics and attain the required knowledge and skill (ISO1-3) outcomes. The directed study allows students to work through material at their own pace allowing them to develop an in-depth understanding of the material (IKO1-5).

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The exam tests acquisition of a clear general knowledge of the subject plus the ability to think and analyse a problem quickly, to select from and to apply both the general knowledge and detailed knowledge of aspects of the subject. The exam also assesses problem solving skills, the ability to work unaided and to communicate clearly and concisely in writing. The group presentation assignment provides students with the opportunity to develop research, teamwork and communication skills as well as to realize the state-of-the-art technology related to materials, corrosions, multiphase flows and flow-structure interactions.
