Aims

This module provides the opportunity for students to undertake a theoretically-informed analysis of a current HR-related business issue and consider the practical implications thereof. Drawing on their knowledge, skills and tools across their programme of studies, students are required to undertake independent research to critically assess and interpret the HR-related business issue and formulate recommendations for practice. They will engage with the relevant academic literature as well as practice-focussed sources to identify, assemble, analyse, interpret and synthesise relevant and balanced data from multiple sources to propose and support a preferred course of action.

Outline Of Syllabus

The content of this capstone module includes contemporary HR-related business issues as presented by practitioners. Therefore, there is no set syllabus.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This module provides an opportunity for students to undertake independent research. There will be a conference day, in which practitioners introduce contemporary HR-related business issues in their organisation, of which students can express a preference for one for further investigation. Three workshops will support students in preparatory work for three elements of assessment. There will be six hours of project-specific supervision.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The 7,000-word management research report is the main piece of assessment. It is acknowledged by CIPD as a more practice-focused alternative to a 14,000-word dissertation without sacrificing academic rigour and enables CIPD membership. A short, recorded, oral power-point presentation of practical implications and recommendations will enhance the focus on a contemporary HR-related business issue and the more practice-focused nature of this capstone module. The extended project outline seeks to prepare students effectively for the other two assessments. Formative feedback will be provided as part of the supervision sessions. All assessments are individual.
